Recovery for tennis has become a much bigger focus over the past decade both at the higher levels of the game as well as at the recreational level. I am personally very happy to hear this. When I first started with the USTA nearly 15 years ago, one of the first major projects I undertook was a major review of the scientific literature on recovery and also we were able to bring in experts to write in-depth chapters on the topic for a book project. These experts were the best in the world in their specific areas and it was a project that took more than a two years to complete. It was one of the first in-depth projects focused on “Recovery in Tennis” and it has been great to see the increased focus in this area over the last few years. However, now that recovery has been more of a focus, we are running into a lot of problems with techniques, modalities and technologies that make broad and/or exaggerated claims with limited or no scientific support for the benefits to the athlete. So my warning to you all is to evaluated the various recovery products, techniques and services and choose wisely.

In this post you will be provided with some links and resources to help you better understand the theory behind recovery, load, overload.

Here is a photo of many of the experts in this recovery project who attended our “Recovery Summit” which the USTA hosted back in 2010.

If you are looking for a quicker easier read, the shortened Recovery In Tennis Booklet is for you. It is a summary of the major points from the project.

LOAD, OVERLOAD & RECOVERY CONSENSUS DOCUMENT

I was very fortunate to be asked to be the Lead Performance/Physiological Expert for the 2018 Team Physician Consensus Conference (and subsequent statement) on the topic of LOAD, OVERLOAD & RECOVERY IN THE ATHLETE.

This was the 19th year of this prestigious event that culminates in a consensus document utilized by Team Physicians working with athletes at all levels of sport throughout the United States. The Team Physician Consensus Project is a joint initiative through the multiple sports medicine related association including: American College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine.

This is one of the most downloaded articles this past year in sports science and performance. Honored to be part of putting this together and working with such a great group of professionals from multiple medical and sport science organizations. Click Here To Download The Full Article
