“Here’s how I’m going to beat you. I’m going to outwork you. That’s it. That’s all there is to it.”

-Pat Summitt (Legendary Female Basketball Coach at University of Tennessee)

Understanding the mind of great coaches is something that is of great interest to all of us. Whether we are a coach or an athlete or someone looking for a coach (parent, agent etc). Understanding the core components of great coaches is something that is more consistent than many people realize. This topic was discussed months ago and you can read the original discussion here. Through our work over the past two decades we have been exposed to the best coaches in tennis at every level of the game, but also in others sports such as golf, basketball, baseball, soccer, MMA, figure skating among others. Just like great athletes have common components, great coaches also have great very similar traits, habits and behaviors. They actually have many of the same traits as great athletes.

-An obsession with improvement

-A committment to the fundamentals

-A dedication and discipline to the details

-A process over outcome mindset

-A standard that is higher than most can accomplish
